PSY101: Introduction to Psychology is a foundational course that introduces students to the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. The course examines key concepts, theories, and research methods used in psychology to understand how individuals think, feel, and behave across different contexts. It provides students with a broad overview of major psychological perspectives, including biological, cognitive, behavioral, developmental, and social approaches.
Students will explore topics such as perception, learning, memory, motivation, personality, intelligence, emotion, mental health, and social interaction. The course emphasizes the application of psychological principles to everyday life, education, health, work, and social relationships, with sensitivity to cultural and contextual factors relevant to African societies.
By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic psychological concepts, apply psychological knowledge to real-world situations, think critically about human behavior, and appreciate psychology as a scientific discipline that contributes to personal development, wellbeing, and effective social functioning.
